Frequently Asked Questions

Is Gyumri safe?

Yes β€” Gyumri is considered safe for travelers. Of course, always use your own judgement when traveling anywhere in the world as standard precautions.

Can I use USD?

Some larger hotels and tour operators may accept USD, but the Armenian Dram is the standard currency almost everywhere β€” plan to pay in AMD.

Do I need to carry cash?

Debit or Credit Cards are widely accepted in the city, but small vendors, markets, and rural stops often expect cash β€” carry some AMD. We recommend exchanging currency in the city, rather than airports to get the best rate possible.

How cold does winter get?

Gyumri sits at altitude and winters are cold, with regular snow and temperatures well below freezing β€” pack accordingly.

Can I visit without a car?

Yes β€” trains, buses, and taxis connect Gyumri with Yerevan and beyond, and our tours include transportation.

Is English spoken?

At hotels and with tour guides, yes. Elsewhere it's less common, though many young people speak some English so you should be able to find your way around without issues.

Local Etiquette

Do

  • βœ” Learn a few Armenian words β€” it's genuinely appreciated
  • βœ” Tip restaurants (around 10% is customary)
  • βœ” Dress respectfully when visiting churches and monasteries

Don't

  • ✘ Photograph people without asking first
  • ✘ Enter monasteries loudly or during a service
